The story of Sangkuriang is a popular folktale from West Java, Indonesia. The story tells of a young man named Sangkuriang who falls in love with a beautiful woman named Dayang Sumbi. However, little did he know that she was actually his own mother.
The story goes that Dayang Sumbi was a widow who lived alone in the forest. One day, she was weaving a piece of cloth when she accidentally cut her finger and bled on the cloth. She then threw the cloth into the river, hoping that no one would see it. However, a fish found the cloth and swallowed it, which caused Dayang Sumbi to become pregnant.
Years later, Sangkuriang was born and grew up to be a strong and handsome young man. One day, he met Dayang Sumbi in the forest and fell in love with her. Not knowing that she was his own mother, Sangkuriang asked her to marry him. Dayang Sumbi agreed, but only under the condition that Sangkuriang could build her a lake and a boat in one night.
Sangkuriang, who was a skilled and ambitious young man, accepted the challenge. He worked tirelessly throughout the night, cutting down trees and moving mountains to build the lake and the boat. However, as dawn was about to break, he realized that he would not be able to finish the task in time. In a fit of rage and frustration, Sangkuriang kicked the boat, which then flew into the air and landed on a nearby mountain, forming what is now known as Mount Tangkuban Perahu.
Realizing the consequences of his actions, Sangkuriang begged for forgiveness from Dayang Sumbi. She forgave him, but on the condition that he would never tell anyone about their relationship. Sangkuriang agreed, and went on to become a powerful ruler. However, he forgot his promise and one day revealed the truth to his people.
Upon hearing the truth, Dayang Sumbi was devastated and cursed Sangkuriang to become a dog. Sangkuriang then turned into a black dog and wandered the forests, searching for a way to undo the curse. To this day, it is said that the black dog is still wandering the forests of West Java, searching for a way to break the curse.
The story of Sangkuriang is a cautionary tale about the consequences of breaking promises and the importance of respecting one’s parents. It is also a tale that emphasizes the power of nature and the need for humans to live in harmony with the environment. Despite being a popular folktale, the story of Sangkuriang remains relevant to this day and is still widely shared and enjoyed by people of all ages in Indonesia and beyond.
